It's the ugliest time of the year, when those giant eyesores show up, those piles that start out as white, and harden grey, and melt and reharden into black, nasty piles of frozen garbage. It's black snow time.

It's depressing to pick your way around these. They seem to last forever; as long as the weather's cold enough, they refuse to go away completely; they just become more and more embedded with trash, and turn blacker and blacker.

I bought cheap shoes today, and books.
