A few nights ago, I was watching TV when I came across a show I'd never seen before called "Shear Genius" on Bravo. I was shocked when I recognized one of the contestants, Tabatha Coffey, as someone I had been good friends with in the early '90s. I was even more shocked to find that she had been one of the more popular contestants and that Bravo had developed a pilot for her called "Tabatha's Salon Takeover."
I find this incredibly ironic given the fact that Ms. Coffey along with her mother, Norma, had "taken over" my identity in 1992 when I moved to London for a few months with the family I was working for. The two of them stole my personal information and opened up several credit cards in my name.
Norma Coffey and I met in 1990 and became good friends when we were both living as nannies in Ridgewood, NJ. When Tabatha moved to the U.S. we also became fast friends. In fact, we used to do nearly everything together; I held her hand when she got her nose-ring and she would often use me as her hair model when she taught styling classes at her salon. The whole time we were out dancing or taking the kids to the park, Tabatha and Norma were actually going through my personal belongings, stealing all of my information in order to wrack up nearly $11,000 in debt.
We fell out of touch after a few years, until 1994, when I received a call from American Express attempting to collect for cards that I had never authorized. I had to go through a lot of trouble to get my name cleared; I filed a police report against Norma Coffey, which I still have copies of, but the police told me, basically, that this "happens a lot" and that there was really "nothing I could do". So they got away with it. Norma even admitted committing the fraud to Kevin Block of one of the credit agencies that came after me, ACB Business Solutions. I have no idea if she ever made any arrangements to pay them back or not. It took along time to clear up the mess and I had to fill out 5 signed affidavits for each card.
I can't be the only person that they did this to. Her mother was obviously the leader, but, Tabatha was in on it; indeed, she held some of the cards in her name or her alias, "Tabatha Coomey"
