Our last day in Disney, my family and I went to the movies. This is a semi-tradition for us. We saw The Princess and the Frog, which I had been hotly anticipating. I know there's controversy, I read the Village Voice piece, and you know what? Fuck off. I loved it. It was beautiful. It was affecting. It made me cry. Two scenes, in particular, made me cry; highlight the below text for spoilers: Number one: Charlotte, the spoiled-princess best friend of the main character who has been dreaming of marrying a prince all her life? The moment she realizes that Tiana and Naveen are in love, and steps aside. Selfless love from a spoiled character? Unanticipated depth? I teared up. Number two: The love story of Ray and Evangaline was beautiful. They killed off the goofy sidekick character, and unlike Gurgi, he did not come back to life. I guessed this would be the only possible resolution to their love story during the song that little firefly sang... but I didn't think they'd have the guts to actually kill off a character and have them stay dead. I was wrong, and I found it very moving. Movie's not perfect. The villain is underdeveloped (although his musical number was spec-fucking-tacular) and the songs, although good, are not as awesomely memorable as I think Menken could've done. The character design isn't uniformly great - I sort of hate the look of the frogs, but Dr Facilier makes up for it, and the John Goodman character delighted me in both look and voice. So, whatev, snobs. I loved it. I want to see it again. |
