12 of June, a gibbous moon...

Today is a special day in two ways:

(1) It's Scott Thompson's 50th birthday.

(2) It's the 10th anniversary of the day I met two of my best friends in the whole world, Gina and Cheryl. We met at a screening of Dave Foley's The Wrong Guy, at a Tribeca theatre that used to be called The Screening Room. Dave was there, too. I'm terribly glad he was. That day really changed my life. I may well still be living with my parents if I hadn't met my goils. Our friendship spiraled past the point of no return that first year, especially after the Kids in the Hall went on tour in early 2000. I started spending every weekend in Jersey at Gina's place, and did that for the next 5 years or so, until the three of us got an apartment together in Jersey City 3 years ago. And now Gina and I are roomies in Hoboken and Cheryl lives not too far away and I have a whole network of wonderful friends that probably would not be as strong as it is were it not for Gina's half-crazy tendency to welcome strangers into her home.

So June 12th has been International Goil Day since 1999, and it includes all of our friends, even those who are far away in exotic places like Michigan, Maine, Georgia, Oregon, Wisconsin, Indiana, Idaho, Texas, Canada, India, Sweden. There are even Goils that are actually boys, that we just call... boys, because I never have liked the term "Boil" (sorry, guys.)

I have experienced a lot of wackiness, krazy kooky adventures, silly fun, scary and sad and happy and hilarious happenings with these people. Births, deaths, moving house, peeing our pants laughing. These people my tribe, near and far.

I love you, Goils. Happy 10th anniversary.
