My mom and aunt just got back from visiting my sister in Japan. I chose not to go with them, for I am foolish and was trying to do The Responsible Thing, save my days off, not spend money unnecessarily, etc. But I'm missing my sis right now and wishing I was crammed with her in a little noodle shop sharing a bowl of soba, or walking with her through a Japanese wood and snapping photos of her being pixieish. Instead of lying here in my bed trying not to think about work tomorrow. Why are you in Tavie's head? 11:42 PM | shower me with attention Friday, March 28, 2008

Somehow this makes it all real. And makes the horror of Times Square almost worth it. We were there with out-of-towners, and G. and I stopped in our tracks and started giggling when we saw the sign. Happy. Why are you in Tavie's head? 11:53 PM | shower me with attention
Some sort of milestone has occurred. My cold is almost gone. Day One in a Post-J Workplace was quiet, and I was sent home three hours early for coughing and looking generally miserable. Why are you in Tavie's head? 8:11 PM | shower me with attention Sunday, March 23, 2008

Today was J's last day at work. He's moving on to better things. He prepared me for this awhile ago, but there's really just no preparing for it. I was pretty much crying semi-secretly all day. One. I do not do well with change. Two. With one third of my team gone, the stress level will now be just jolly awful. I will be the most senior person in my department. My source of information and problem-solver will be gone, and if I ever have to call out sick*, all hell will most certainly break loose, or Guy Incognito will have a nervous breakdown. Three. He's my second best friend at work. The only reason he's not my first best friend at work is because my best friend since the age of 6 also happens to work there. He interviewed me, he was my manager for the first 2 and a half years, and he has kept me sane throughout the days. I will have no one to be a KITH fan with at work, no one to use as my dumping-ground and steam-pressure-valve. No one to send me funny LOLcats and deflect salespeople when I'm drowning. Okay. Gonna start crying again so I need to stop thinking about it. After all, there is truth underneath all this selfishness, which is: I'm happy as hell for him that he got out, I don't care who knows it, and I'm jealous and proud of him at once. And he's gonna be a super dad this September. Happy trails, Mon Capitan.** *For instance, today I woke up with a painful head cold, but that's just too bad. Dayquil did rock my socks off, though. I love Dayquil. **This makes it sound like he's dying. I will see him again. I lent him my copy of Neverwhere and Gina needs to read it next. I love Cory Doctorow. Speaking of this, read this short story he posted to earlier today. It's a small, perfect little work of hilarious genius. Why are you in Tavie's head? 4:42 PM | shower me with attention

Gina talking about moving on her blog reminds me that I haven't talked about moving. I'm moving. We're moving, me and Gina, in May. To Hoboken. I am sad because I love this place, and yet it's way too luxurious and expensive and I know it. And Hoboken is where Goose is from. And the giant chicken. They asked for it, they got it... Do befriend "Kids in the Hall: Live as We'll Ever Be" on Facebook, if you would. They would appreciate it. Especially Kevin.* *I have no idea if this is true, but Kevin has such puppy-dog eyes that it seems plausible. Why are you in Tavie's head? 12:26 AM | shower me with attention Sunday, March 16, 2008
The weekend happenings involved: Staten Island with the Apells. I saw a movie I'd never heard of, based on a musical I'd never heard of, called Cabin in the Sky. It starred Ethel Waters, whom I now love. Also, Rochester from The Jack Benny Show. Whom I've always loved but whom should never, ever have been allowed to sing. Brunch with the incomparable sarah c. I had not seen her since I was in San Francisco in 2002 visiting my good friend Rynn and my good friends the Kids in the Hall. Sarah c is one of those people that you can not see for 6 years and then have the grandest time with on short notice. Dinner with my family. The Easter Bunny left plastic eggs with money in them all around the apartment for me to find. The Easter Bunny doesn't care that I'll be 30 in 15 months*. *OH MY GOD. So, a while ago a couple of people on the Kids in the Hall LJ community* thought that the Kids should have a Myspace profile for their upcoming tour (which doesn't even have an official site anywhere, for pete's sake.) I thought this a brilliant idea and I approached my various Official Contacts about it, who ALSO thought it was a great idea. But then I didn't hear anything about it awhile, so the other day I said to OVOR "Well, you know I'm just gonna MAKE one..." to which they replied, "Great idea! I'll get you what you need!" &etc. So this is what I've been working on. Soon we'll have a tour blog, maybe, or at least some official participation from The Talent. Friend them. I'm very glad to have a Project to take my mind from work. *It was two girls named Jenny, to be specific. The Jennies I know? Ha ha, look what I got! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: "THE KIDS IN THE HALL" RETURN TO THE ROAD! The Most Critically-Acclaimed Comedy Troupe of Our Generation Hits the Road for First Major Tour in Six Years "The Kids in the Hall", the watershed comedy troupe of the 1990's, are returning to their live-performance roots for a major North American theater tour in 2008. The tour kicks off at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville, IN on (date), and will include approximately 30 cities in the US and Canada. Discovered by Lorne Michaels, creator of "Saturday Night Live", "The Kids in the Hall" - Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson - exploded into the American consciousness when their half-hour sketch comedy show debuted on cable's HBO in 1989. The troupe’s distinctly edgy humor broke new ground with their characterizations of secretaries, prostitutes, gays, drug users, and oddball creations like the half human Chicken Lady, the vengeful "head crusher" and the chauvinist Cabbage Head. Critical acclaim, Emmy and Ace nominations, and a legion of extremely dedicated fans quickly followed the debut. The show itself ended in 1995, but lived on in constant re-runs on cable's Comedy Central, offering new fans the opportunity to fall under the "hilariously warped" (Entertainment Weekly) spell of the "Kids'" spin on life, love, lust, middle-class values, and the dark corners of suburbia. Since the show ended, each member of the troupe has been involved in a variety of extremely successful projects, but finally acquiesced to the steady demands from fans to take their classic sketches out of the hall and back in front of a live audience in 2000. A movie version of the tour, “Same Guys, New Dresses” followed, along with another tour and DVD in 2002 (“Tour of Duty”). The 2008 tour, titled “Live As We’ll Ever Be”, represents a new era in the troupe’s collaboration, and is comprised of completely fresh material which simultaneously reflects who they are now and their patently off-kilter take on ordinary life. Favorite characters from the television series appear in entirely new situations, sharing the stage with new KITH personas which are destined for the same level of cult adoration. In a world where most entertainment tries to play it safe, “The Kids in the Hall” steadfastly refuse to follow the trend, preferring instead to slaughter sacred cows and look at the world – and each other – with refreshing honesty. Join The Kathies, Headcrusher, the Sales Guys, Buddy Cole, and people you’ve never met before (but somehow recognize from your everyday life) on an adventure into the bizarre and side-splittingly funny. It's rainy today, grey. It's been a rough week for me, for work-related reasons that it would not be prudent to discuss in this forum. (It's never prudent to discuss work-related matters in any specific way on a personal, public blog, my children, especially if your full name is attached to that blog, as mine is to this.) So while I won't discuss the work issues themselves, they are well known to my friends who read this, and to those of you reading this who may not know me as well, and whom I can only assume are here for information regarding the upcoming Kids in the Hall tour, I'll only say that my employment woes are a symptom, or a result*, of our current depressed economy, are dismayingly common in this day and age, &etc., &etc. I've been dealing with the stress by eating whatever the hell I feel like eating, in any quantity I've liked, and not accounting for it. This goes against the plan I'd set for myself back in September, which led to my ongoing (if snail-like) weight loss over the last six months. So today, on this grey day, I will pick my eating habits up by their bootstraps and try to remember that the goal is to avoid getting diabetes. Both of my parents now have diabetes. I should make every attempt not to get it. Which means that I should not indiscriminately shove cold roast pork chow fun in my face every time I pass the refrigerator. *I don't feel up to the intellectual challenge of sorting out the cause-and-effect of this situation. My intellectual challenges of late have been limited to the solitaire-related variety. Why are you in Tavie's head? 5:45 PM | shower me with attention Thursday, March 06, 2008

This weekend I knitted a ponytail hat - that's a winter cap that buttons around my ponytail in the back, since I wear one almost every day and they make it very difficult to wear a normal cap. You can't really tell in the photo, but the hat's actually a deep, dark indigo-navy shade of the butteriest baby alpaca ever. I am thoroughly obsessed with baby alpaca. Speaking of baby animals, I came home this evening to find that Cheryl had adopted two baby tuxedo kittens named Choo-choo and Mitt-mitt. Choo-choo is a girl and Mitt-mitt is a boy. I died right dead, they're so cute. Why are you in Tavie's head? 10:25 PM | shower me with attention |
