I was just sitting here, taping together the spine of yet another crumbling paperback and thinking about how much I love crumbling paperbacks and other old books. I just finished reading another old Heinlein of my dad's and found that he had scrawled on the back inside cover, in his ballpoint-Olde English calligraphy*,

The sanguine sun hath bathed each of the slain
Its dying rays attuned to failing breath

And, really, if I'd bought this book new, would I have been treated to that particular coda?

Where did I learn to scribble in books? From my dad. It's okay, though, I won't scribble in other people's books. It's okay to lend me books.

Really, it is.

*Okay, a normal human would "scrawl" in the back of a book; I guess if it's calligraphy, it's not really scrawled.
