Once in awhile the planets align and I manage to make it out of my house on a weekend. This has been happening fairly regularly recently. Sometimes I even make it to places where other people my age gather, and engage in the appropriate drinking and nodding-appreciatively-at-music.
This happened last night, when I went to Man in Gray*'s record release party for their new album, I Can't Sleep Unless I Hear You Breathing
I am always surprised when I end up having fun on an excursion out of The Tave Cave, and I don't know why that should be; I usually end up enjoying myself, being glad I made the effort, but I seem to forget that immediately upon setting foot in the door.
The band was in high spirits; J. & D. were surprised to see me (this was my biggest motivation for attending); the house beer at Union Hall is refreshing and tasty; some work pals were there; I actually met the famous Tina after watching her tear the stage up 2-3 times a year for the past three years.
As for the record itself, I haven't given it the listen it deserves yet. I actually prefer the intimacy of a recording to live music performances. I can't enjoy anything fully in public; music should be savoured, played and replayed until you're good friends with a track, and eventually get burned out and have to skip past the track for six months whenever it comes on random. I only skip past my closest pals.
Also, my family barged in bearing exquisite Middle Eastern food, under the guise of seeing my new room, but really just to visit. They know the way to get to my heart is to come bearing spinach pies and meat pies and hummus and baba ganouj and tabouli and taramasalada, from the old Brooklyn place whose name I can't remember. I went back to my parents' place after the show and spent most of today stretched out on the couch watching all of season three of Slings and Arrows. The third and last season. I can't believe it's over. Such a good, good show. Dammit, Mark, whydja stop?
*I realize it's been awhile since I last mentioned them, but they are my boss's band, a bunch of crazy kids who make fine music.Labels: "man in gray", canadian comedy, hummus Why are you in Tavie's head? 8:20 PM | shower me with attention
Dad taught me a fine Yiddish phrase today with an impressive degree of self-awareness on his part: Ehr lozt zich betn. He says it means, "He lets himself be asked."
It is a criticism of someone who mentions a thing that he would like but then feigns indifference to it, hoping that someone will insist or beg him to enjoy it. This is the very essence of my dad.Labels: dad, yiddish Why are you in Tavie's head? 11:31 AM | shower me with attention
