We got our Christmas tree today. His name is Leroy. We'll decorate him tomorrow. Do you know, it's as difficult for me to be tolerant of other people's beliefs as it is for them to be tolerant of mine? I semi-lurk on this message board, and the subject of the evolution of some characters in this comic book was brought up as an explanation for certain genetic traits they would seem to display. The discussion was going along, and then this person comes in and goes, "Could we maybe not bring up evolution please. I find it completely obserd [sic] and illogical. I highly doubt that even in a fantasy world it could exist." And then, okay, that post in itself was actually offensive to me, and I'm trying to piece together why it should have been, because what do I care if some 15-year-old person who was obviously raised by strongly religious people and taught that evolution is absurd - probably taught it in school - why should I care about that? Well, the amazing thing is, the people on this message board are so damn nice and nothing even remotely close to flaming ensued. Gentle, tolerant words of understanding were exchanged and the topic shifted. And I was thinking, "Yes, it's a good thing I have only the energy to lurk, so I don't come rampaging in like some intolerant buffoon and start ranting about just what the Fundamentalists are teaching the future leaders of this country." Why should I care? Oh, happy Christmas, people. I love the baby Jesus, but only for the kitsch factor. |
