With my ongoing spiritual malaise, all I want to do these days is work sudoku puzzles and knit. I actually signed up to do that knitting thing for the Visiting Nurse Service of NY and I need to get started making useful things for the sick and elderly, but I find my mind wandering to useless things like these felted pumpkins. They're so cute. Luckily, I don't have any wool yarn in the right colours, so I'm forced to use up what I do have. I'm almost finished with a pair of these for Gina; they're made with a strand of off-white baby alpaca (soft and luxurious) and a strand of red "mystery yarn" I got as a present from Mush (either superwash wool, or, more likely, soft acrylic*) held together. The first one is done and I'll post a picture when my new computer arrives (tomorrow or the next day!) Not sure what I'm going to make for the volunteer knitting, but I'm going to use up all the cheap acrylic stuff that Gina and I have. Not that I don't think that sick and eldery don't deserve expensive luxury-yarn items, but they really won't know the difference if the pieces are well-made, and I'd rather use the luxury stuff to make gifts for loved ones... *You can tell if a mystery yarn is natural fiber or manmade acrylic fiber by burning a piece; if it turns to ash, it's natural; if it melts it's acrylic. I performed this test on the Mush yarn, and it turned shiny and hard, which points to acrylic. Normally I'm quite the snob about acrylic, but the Mush yarn is actually pretty nice acrylic, and knitting it together with a luxury yarn like alpaca makes me feel okay about the whole thing. They're very soft and warm. |
