Tuesday, June 03, 2003 Week 1: Films About Making Films --Living in Oblivion by Tom DiCillo --State and Main by David Mamet Week 2: Genre --Stagecoach by John Ford --The Big Sleep by Howard Hawks Week 3: Auteur --Persona by Ingmar Bergman --Breathless by Jean Luc Godard Week 4: Non-Fiction Film --Crumb by Terry Zwigoff --Dog Star Man by Stan Brakhage Week 5: New York --Mean Streets by Martin Scorcese (may be replaced by a Spike Lee joint) --Manhattan by Woody Allen Required Reading Film Art: An Introduction (sixth edition) by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson Well, NYU it ain't. And there will be no napping; the only movie on this list I've actually seen is Crumb. The only one I've ever particularly wanted to see was Manhattan. I've actually been meaning to see it for years and something always interrupts me. Apparently, my mother was watching this movie in the summer of 1979 and went into false labour. I have decided that, with the exception of some friends of mine, film students and film professors are pretentious noodleheads. I'm basing this purely on the way my professor pronounced certain words, and the fact that only one other person in the class besides me laughed when Steve Buscemi freaked out in Living in Oblivion. |
