Some people actually collect these silly Disney souvenier pins.
Anyway, I noticed a bunch of them today that had the names of a U.S. state on each one, with each state assigned a different Disney character. (There's a list and picture of some of them here.) I was trying to figure out why each state was assigned each character. It's sort of a fun puzzle. Some of them are really obvious and some of them I can't figure out. The ones I can figure: Alaska - Monstro the whale Arizona - Pegleg Pete. Southwest. Old West. Okay. California - Surfin' Donald. Connecticut - Ichabod Crane. I get the "New England" logic, but wasn't Washington Irving from Tarrytown, NY? Florida - Mickey. Disney World. Hawaii - Lilo. Duh. Idaho - Mr Potato Head. Ha ha. Kentucky - Horace. Kentucky Derby. Louisiana - Brer Rabbit. Just a Southern thing? Maine - Elliot. Pete's Dragon takes place in Maine. Maryland - Sebastian. Crabs. Massachusetts - Chip. Boston Tea Party. Nevada - Showgirl Daisy. New Hampshire - Wart. King Arthur. AH! The Granite State! Sword in the stone! South Carolina - Belle. Southern Belle. Tennessee - Trusty. Texas - Woody. Vermont - Snow White. White Mountains. Washington - Wicked Witch. Washington apples. Wisconsin - Clarabelle. Cow. Moo. Milk. Not on the page, but I recall: New Jersey - Flower. Garden state. Michigan - Mr Toad. Motorcar fanatic. And that's all I can figger. I don't have enough Americana for the rest of them. I've just wasted so much online time typing that... |
